A fine Welsh vernacular oak side chair dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, displaying the honest craftsmanship and enduring appeal of traditional country furniture.
The chair features a tall, gently reclining back with a distinctive vase-shaped splat, flanked by square uprights. It retains its original solid oak seat, which has naturally developed into three sections over the centuries, a characteristic often found in period examples. The chair stands on square rear legs with attractively turned front legs, all joined using traditional pegged mortise and tenon construction.
Having survived for over 200 years, this chair bears the rich patina and time-worn character that only genuine age can provide. Signs of use, historic repairs, and old worm holes are all present, reflecting its long history and adding to its authenticity and charm. A wonderfully honest example of Welsh vernacular furniture that would make an excellent addition to any period or country house interior.
