A truly impressive and substantial antique butchers block, beautifully worn through decades of hard use. Years of chopping and butchery have created a deep characterful dip in the surface, while the edges are covered in authentic knife marks and cuts that tell the story of its working life.
Dating from approx. 1880-1920 this block comes from the era before mass-production and construction was made by strips of timber glued together and reinforced with heavy steel rods. The rise of supermarkets replaced the traditional butcher’s shops and these magnificent large chopping blocks gradually disappeared, making surviving examples increasingly sought after.
This piece has had castors added allowing it to be moved with ease despite its substantial size and weight. Tiny reminants of white and turquois paint show in places as the colour of the base has been changed over time.
There are signs of old worm holes but adds to the wonderful patina and authentic vintage charm. With its timeless character it would make a great kitchen island and I’m sure will last another hundred years. A truely spectacular one-of-a-kind statement piece that would look incredible in a country kitchen, restaurant, cafe or retail space.
